The Unsolved Mystery of Anna Bon

The latest installment of “Stories”, Lumedia Musicworks’ comedic documentary series, explores the lives and works of underrepresented first women composers. This season’s STORIES are generously underwritten by The Carl B. and Florence E. King Foundation. Donations support the nonprofit’s mission to bring early music to life.

The daughter of professional musicians and a student at the famous Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, this young Italian female composer and multi-instrumentalist was well-positioned to perform and publish throughout Europe. As a central member of the family’s pioneering mobile opera company, Anna traveled to the music centers and high courts of Europe. Partnered with her singer/stage mom and jack-of-all-trades manager/father, she secured the success of the family business by charming audiences and securing patronage from the aristocracy.

Austin-based Baroque flutist Nuria Canales portrays Anna Bon, and performs works by the composer with the Dallas-based ensemble. Narrator Phillip Thompson returns to the series as Robert Thack of Unsolved Mysteries. The mystery component stems from Anna Bon’s unknown whereabouts from the year 1767 on. The segment explores the various theories behind her mysterious disappearance, including an alien abduction.

Researched and written by Lumedia Musicworks’ directors Julianna Emanski and Molly Hammond, the script is by Douglas Bankston and historical images provided by R. Jenai Talkington. Emanski directed and edited the film.

On May 26, 2023, Stories: Anna Bon will be available to watch at no cost through the nonprofit’s website.

Lumedia performs live concerts in Dallas, and maintains a digital presence via short films and documentary series. Short films have won numerous awards at film festivals in the U.S. and abroad, and are distributed as in-house television programming to hospitals throughout Texas and the United States. The documentaries are freely accessible online, and taken to DFW senior centers as interactive presentations.
