Bike Zambia 2018
Ending HIV/AIDS and Empowering Women and Girls in Zambia
WHAT IS BIKE ZAMBIA?
More than just a 325+ mile cycling ride, Bike Zambia harnesses the energy of participants to make a positive change in the world. Zambia is one of Africa's poorest countries with one of the highest rates of HIV infection. A staggering 1 in 8 adults are infected with HIV and 64 percent of the total population lives below the poverty line, rising to 80 percent in rural areas. Life expectancy is just 58.1 years, however, this is a considerable increase from the 2012 life expectancy of 49.4 years, partly thanks to improved access to antiretroviral treatments. The need for help is clear.
WHO WE BENEFIT
Since our first Bike Zambia ride in 2012, over 160 cyclists have joined the annual ride, raising over $800,000 to support Zambian organizations. Partner organizations like ZHECT and Grassroot Soccer work locally in Zambia to reduce stigma, increase HIV prevention and access to treatment, and promote testing. World Bicycle Relief provides bicycles to women and girls so that they have access to transportation to work and school.
