Reducing socioeconomic and racial disparities in breastfeeding support
Every infant has the right to access breastmilk, and their birth parent should have the right to chest/breastfeed. Despite comparable chest/breastfeeding initiation rates in California among Black (86%), Latinx (92.8%), and Caucasian (95%) birthing parents, there is a significant divergence within three months, with rates dropping to 60% for Black, 64% for Latinx, and 78% for Caucasian birthing parents, as reported by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
This is why the San Diego Breastfeeding Center Foundation (SDBFCF) exists.
Our mission: to reduce these socioeconomic and racial disparities in chest/breastfeeding support by increasing access to qualified lactation consultants for marginalized groups, such as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and low-income families. This mission is accomplished by:
- Increasing Diversity: By promoting diverse representation of lactation consultants and clinicians in the lactation field through scholarships and support grants (32 in the past 2 years!)
- Direct Care: Meeting the needs of the community through low-barrier direct care. (Over 900 free/reduced fee lactation appts in 2023!)
- Expanding Access: Working towards reducing or eliminating chest/breastfeeding deserts in San Diego County. (New clinic opened in Southeast San Diego in 2023!)
Accomplishments since 2016:
- Provided over 2500 free/reduced-rate breastfeeding consultations for BIPOC families and low-income families.
- Awarded 32 scholarships BIPOC individuals to become lactation professionals
