In Creating Energy Equity for Limited Income Families in New Mexico
Some of Prosperity Work’s accomplishments:
August, 2021: US Department of Energy Secretary, Jennifer Granholm, traveled to Albuquerque to hear stories of energy efficiency improvements in limited income family homes. Albuquerque was chosen because of the amazing work here, spearheaded by Prosperity Works founding director, Ona Porter.
July, 2023: White House Infrastructure Coordinator, Mitch Landrieu, was sent by the Whitehouse to celebrate our successes. Among his stops was a visit to the home of Jennifer Morales, a mother of four, in the La Mesa neighborhood of Albuquerque. Prosperity Works helped the Morales family access energy efficiency upgrades worth over $10,000. These upgrades will reduce CO2 emissions by 6.5 tons and will save 136,000 gallons of water over the lifetime of the home.
February, 2024: The Environmental Protection Agency profiled Prosperity Works for serving those most in need and hardest to reach in its just released EPA State and Local Climate and Energy Program. The Bringing the Benefits Program focuses on effective initiatives to provide energy efficiency and renewable energy to low-income communities.
All of Prosperity Works’ energy centered work is aimed at increasing energy justice and decreasing energy burden. Energy burden is the least understood contributor to poverty. Imagine the financial impact of spending 20 to 30 percent of your already limited annual income on home energy. Now contrast this with 2 to 4 percent for middle- and high-income families!
