DR CONGO SUMMER DRIVE to Provide Food, Med Support
Summer Mission
June 2, 2024 UPDATE:
We are headed back to DR Congo in a few weeks to deliver food, and other essential supplies, and get some emergency medical attention for two of our children. As many of you know the conflict in East Congo has displaced 6.5 million people.
The ongoing crisis, particularly around Goma, has severely impacted food prices and access to food. The conflict has caused over 230,000 people fleeing to Goma since Feb 2024. An influx that has strained local resources, leading to overcrowded camps and a sharp rise in food prices.
Basic commodities like maize, beans, and charcoal have seen prices double or even triple due to supply chain disruptions caused by the conflict and blockades. Additionally, the humanitarian situation in Goma is dire, with many displaced people living in makeshift shelters with limited access to food, water, and healthcare. The presence of armed groups and the use of heavy weaponry in and around Goma have heightened the risks for civilians and disrupted local markets.
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND DONATE WHAT YOU CAN.
UPDATE:
Our mission to deliver food and supplies to Rebecca and the children at the shelter was successful. We also had a chance to track down Olive, a young girl we had been following in the docuseries and offer her some support. She is now living in a large refugee camp on the outskirts of Goma with her newborn baby.
We have decided to see if we can raise additional funds so we can continue these deliveries with more regularity.
------------------------
As you may know, we have close ties to many people in DR Congo from these past few years spent making the docu-series and feature film Fight Like A Girl.
Unfortunately, the situation in that part of the world has been forgotten due to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. But that does not mean it is not just as dire, and in many ways, more so.
For some context, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been marked by intense conflict and humanitarian crisis for decades. The violence is primarily between the Congolese army and the rebel groups, but recently it has escalated to a frightening level, leading to significant displacement of people.
Now, to be clear, I’m not here to get into the politics of the situation but simply to bring some awareness to what has become a severe humanitarian crisis — with approximately 6.1 million internally displaced people in the DRC. THAT IS NOT A TYPO.
Additionally, about 2.8 million of these displaced individuals are children, highlighting the severe impact on the younger population. The displacement is largely concentrated in the eastern provinces of the DRC, where we have been working for the past 3 years.
Many of the people we have been working with as well as a small children’s facility we built two years ago are, as you can imagine, under incredible stress and having a nearly impossible time getting food and necessary supplies.
So we will be driving there on March 2 to offer some assistance. If you would like to contribute to our efforts you can make a donation to the We Are Limitless general fund — anything we receive for the next two weeks will go towards this mission.
Thank you for reading… and please be aware of what’s going on in the rest of the world…. Including DR Congo and Sudan.
