Making a Difference in the Lives of Foster Children:
One of many success stories made possible by our services involves a 16 year old foster youth who suffered extreme physical abuse as a child and was abandoned by his parents. When one of our volunteer education advocate attorneys became involved, Danny (not his real name) had been in the foster care system since age 10, living in more than 17 different placements. His trauma had been untreated, and Danny was struggling academically; he had difficulty focusing due to emotional outbursts. He had been sent to live in a residential treatment center and was starting again in another new school. His education advocate got to know Danny, and worked to ensure the school addressed Danny’s academic and emotional issues with a special education plan and a behavioral plan. Working with Danny, the education advocate attorney discovered that Danny had a talent for cooking, and helped him get into a program that teaches cooking skills, restaurant management, and behavioral skills to youth. Danny thrived there and became highly motivated to finish high school. Danny has now graduated with a full diploma and hopes to attend community college. Through the diligent work of his education advocate, Danny finally had someone who focused on his personal strengths and fought to make sure he was no longer lost in the foster care system but was given the chance to succeed.
