The Abubakari II
Biofuel outboard boat motors for the fishing industry

option to power local fishing boats in Senegal, West Africa. Using traditional wooden boats
known as pirogues, we developed an outboard motor that could be powered
by biofuel derived from the locally grown Jatropha plant. To raise
awareness for the potential this source of fuel provides we are building a prototype pirogue (the Abubakari II), made of recycled wood and will be powered by sail and biofuel, to prove that old and new ways can meld to provide sustainable solutions for the future. We will be using the boat as demo in fishing villages along the coast of Senegal, and one day she may cross the Atlantic...
