House for Rocky

Rocky, our youngest Javan gibbon, just turned one year old!

Many of you have been following Rocky’s story since birth. On July 2, 2023, we noticed Oula showing signs of labor. After a challenging face-up delivery she rejected the infant.  It was two weeks before she began to show any interest.  For the past year, staff hand-reared and cared for Rocky.  We are happy to say Rocky is thriving. He’s met all his milestones, eating solid food, climbing, swinging, walking and now running. Despite Oula's initial lack of interest, she became increasingly interested in the baby. She and her partner Medina watch Rocky play near their enclosure, occasionally touching and grooming him under staff supervision. These visits are essential to reintegrating Rocky into his family. Rocky has boundless energy between 5 am and 6 pm and is full of mischief.

We are looking forward to beginning the next stage of his reintroduction. To do that, we need your help!

While Rocky gradually spends more time outdoors near his parents, he still spends a significant amount indoors. We want to ensure a smooth transition as he prepares to live with his gibbon parents. We plan to build a small insulated house next to his parent’s enclosure. This house will provide a safe and comfortable space for Rocky to play, nap, and spend the night, especially during the first few years. 

We are starting a fund to build Rocky's House, with the goal of $20,000. We are happy to announce we have already received the starting amount of $1,500 from the Los Angeles Breakfast Club Foundation Grant. We are incredibly grateful for the support. Your contributions, no matter how big or small, are deeply appreciated and make a significant difference in our efforts to provide the best care for Rocky.
