Make Solar a Reality
Eden Ministries is dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment for vulnerable children. However, frequent power outages have disrupted our ability to offer consistent education and care. These blackouts place an extra strain on our caregivers and compromise our children’s daily routines. Furthermore, when the electrical grid is functioning, we are paying nearly $0.30 per kWh—almost double the average cost of electricity in the United States.
To address these challenges, we are launching our Solar Power Campaign. In the first phase, we aim to install over 50 kW of solar panels on the roofs of our farming and agriculture buildings. By utilizing the newly approved net metering program, we can significantly reduce our escalating energy costs. The total cost for this installation, including connecting the panels to the grid with a new electric meter, is $54,000. (Far below the cost to install in the US.) Once operational, these panels will generate several megawatt hours of power annually, saving us thousands of dollars in energy expenditures and shielding us from the financial impacts of rising energy costs.
In the second phase of our Solar Campaign, we plan to install a large solar array in the Children's Village, a smaller set of panels on the roof of the school and additional panels at the farm. We are also considering the installation of a battery backup system tied to our solar panels in the village and at the farm. This battery system would largely replace generator use for shorter outages and vastly reduce the amount of diesel used during extended outages. We will move forward with the second phase once we fully own the Children's Village land, which we currently lease, to avoid increasing the property's value before the purchase is finalized.
