In Nigeria, a patient has a 0.00006% chance of receiving open-heart surgery. The overall economic situation of most individuals is extreme poverty, with most families living on less than $300 per year. Open-heart surgery in the country costs around $10K- $16K at most institutions. It would take 14.4 years for a family in poverty to have enough to afford an open-heart procedure in Nigeria, this would be if they did not pay for rent, food, or any life necessities. Access, quality, and affordability are limiting factors for most Nigerians when it comes to healthcare.
The Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation and The Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital are at the forefront of addressing this issue. Through our partnership with the U.S. based non-profit VOOM Foundation, medical volunteers frequent the DIOM Hospital on medical missions to serve our patients with the highest quality of care, while focusing on training our local staff at the Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital. To date, we have documented 28,715 hours of one-on-one in-person training and 2738 online training hours to 48 hospitals across the nation. We have provided 4025 free patient screenings and distributed 10,158 pounds of free medication to patients in need.
