Vansh Tandon May 2025 Medical Mission
Join My Efforts to Save Lives in Nigeria!
Greetings, friends and family,
In May of 2025, I will be headed to Oraifite, Nigeria, to embark on my first open-heart medical mission with the VOOM Foundation. I was drawn to this organization early in my freshman year because of its noble mission to extend healthcare privilege to the underserved. Being involved with VOOM for over 2 years has undoubtedly been the most fulfilling and moving experience of my college career. In these past two years, I’ve had the privilege of being part of several fundraising campaigns and packaging the medical supplies utilized in the mission trips. I’m looking forward to taking my involvement with VOOM to the next level this upcoming May by attending a medical mission trip. Through this eye-opening experience, I hope to learn more about the healthcare disparities in Nigeria, while also serving and educating the Nigerian people about safe healthcare practices.
The VOOM team will share expertise to train and empower the local cardiac staff at the Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital. We will also direct our efforts toward underserved children and adults who are unable to afford the high cost of open-heart surgery—each action we take transforms lives, families, and generations in Nigeria. I am raising funds to support travel expenses, essential surgery drugs, patient open-heart scholarships, consumable supplies, and much more. Your generosity will ensure indigent patients receive life-saving surgery!
Nigeria is home to over 220 million people, and the WHO defines poverty as living on less than $300 a year. Tragically, over 50% of the population falls below this line, making it nearly impossible for an individual to save for essential surgery. In 2013, there was not a single facility in Nigeria offering heart care or surgery. For those living here, the chance of receiving heart surgery is .00006%.
We will bring all necessary medical supplies into the country to operate on patients. As we work together to elevate healthcare standards and accessibility, your impact on the people of Nigeria and the future of countless families will be immeasurable. Healthcare should be a universal right, available to every individual, no matter where they are born.
I’d greatly appreciate any support you can provide towards funding my trip. Together, we can change the standard of healthcare in Nigeria!
With much love and gratitude,
Vansh
