Leave No Trace Otter Exploration!

Talladega National Forest

Sunday, February 23

Meet at 9 a.m. at Pinky Burns Trailhead

Trail Leader: Jonathan Kelly [email protected]

Leave No Trace is integral to everything we do at Wild Alabama and there are always ways to further unpack and apply these 7 principles. Sometimes having real-world situations can help make this more fun and applicable so what better way than going to look for otters along the Pinhoti Trail. In late December, an otter was spotted multiple times at this location so let's go see if it's still there! Along the way, we will discuss the 7 Leave No Trace principles and how we can apply them not only to outdoor recreation but in our everyday lives. Even if we don’t see otters, this will still be a really lovely hike on a fan-favorite section of the Pinhoti Trail.

These principles were established by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, and built on work by the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management in the mid-1980s. This relationship continues today. The principles are based on and informed by scientific research in the fields of recreation ecology and human dimensions of natural resources. Take a look at the science behind the principles on the Leave No Trace website.

Participants will be provided with a Leave No Trace reference card that offers reminders of these important principles.

Our programs and outreach hikes are (mostly) free of charge yet we gladly accept donations to help support the consistent and continued education programs year after year. You can use the express donation feature at the bottom of this page.
