Santa Barbara enjoys the reputation as “The American Riviera” due to its beautiful beaches, pricey homes and perfect weather. But Santa Barbara at a closer look is a microcosm of the changing demographics in the United States. There is an emerging underserved Latino population in Santa Barbara and across the nation. Language barriers, low wages and lack of resources are having an adverse effect on this community. When students fall behind academically, low-income families often cannot afford the support needed to catch up. Gateway Educational Services is effectively closing the gap for underrepresented students in our community. Our learning center has consistently provided 1:1 tutoring for low-income first-generation students. These students received the extra personalized attention necessary for success. Whether this means passing an English class needed for graduation or having someone explain fractions in a clear way, our center is a second chance in school. We have enjoyed being a part of their academic growth every year. However, without this funding, these low-income students are barred from the opportunity for academic support.
