Strengthening Access to Make a Difference: A Special Campaign
Art for Life’s Sake (AFLS) has introduced music education to nearly 800 students since 1990. Some are college graduates, and most are in meaningful careers – while they continue to enjoy musical experiences. AFLS has received funding support from the Tennessee Arts Commission, Arts Memphis, the University of Memphis Music Department, businesses, private donors and other sources. Despite that, it has operated on a limited budget, and some years, reducing program participants; thus, limiting access to music because their parents can’t afford to pay for services.
AFLS was founded to give Memphis area youth opportunities to build their assets through discovery and expression of their hidden talents. AFLS’ mission is to provide music education and arts access for under-served youth. Its vision is that every child will be nurtured in an environment that promotes creativity, imagination, and talent development. AFLS sees music, movement and other arts as motivators and implementers that all children will respond to. Recently, the National Endowment for the Arts released a new report called The Arts and Achievement in At-Risk Youth: Findings from Four Longitudinal Studies. The report’s conclusion: at-risk students who have access to the arts in or out of school tend to have better academic results, better opportunities in the workforce and more civic engagement in their communities.
Providing arts programs to children in education and with this nonprofit organization have shown, for many participants: a strong sense of self-identity, confidence in abilities, stronger character and relational skills, and aspirations to try other challenging tasks in school. It is also convincing that when we put instruments and other art tools in the hands of youth, they create something beautiful and are less likely to pick-up weapons because they value themselves and others better.
