Haitian formal education rates are the lowest in the Western Hemisphere, with a literacy rate of only 60%. The average literacy rate for other Caribbean and Central American countries is 90%.
The country faces a shortage of financial resources, qualified teachers, and educational supplies. Because of this, the clear majority of available schools are private schools operated by local churches or international nonprofit organizations.
The Haitian Constitution requires that public schooling be available to all children, but the government has yet to uphold this standard. Only 10% of the federal budget is spent on elementary and secondary schools. One million children between the ages of 5 and 15 are not enrolled in school.
In the absence of public schooling, most available schools are private in nature.
As previously mentioned, many of these private schools are operated by churches or nonprofit organizations. Unfortunately, however, even private schools are not guaranteed to give children a quality education. Many of these schools are run as a for-profit venture. They do not staff qualified teachers or books and are often referred to as “lottery” schools, illustrating the student’s chances of learning anything.
In addition to the lack of available quality schooling, Haitian students face many challenges to the success of their academic careers. Societal factors, such as racism, pollution, poor housing, violence, and poverty can impact a child’s access to schooling. In addition, the massive earthquake of 2010 exacerbated the impact of these already limiting factors. The earthquake also damaged or destroyed many school buildings, further limiting the already scarce educational options.
With over 90% of the country’s students attending private, church-run or internationally operated schools, the need for organizations offering quality educational opportunities, such as The House of Happiness, is obvious. Please support us in our quest to improve the lives of these children and to give them a brighter future.
The House Of Happiness Inc took over a mission in Arcahaie, Haiti that been operate for 23 years. THOH has now been working in Arcahaie, Haiti for over 2 years. In that time, the ministry team has had the opportunity to identify some of the greatest needs of the community. One of the greatest needs of the children surrounding THOH property is education.
In the year of 2017, we met with a lot of families to discuss the possibility of their children attending school by participating in THOH School Program.
When we ask them why their children haven’t yet attended school, they answer saying we don’t have the money to provide education for our children.
The school in Arcahaie, Haiti is 23 years old, and in need of the old repair. We have at least 350 students, and some of them can’t even come to school because the school is very small. We need to raise an amount of 100,000 US dollar so we can build a new school, and purchase a new land for the school. We need to hire a contractor, and buying all the equipment etc. With your support, we can change the life of the children in Haiti.
Please consider praying for these children as they embark on a journey of learning that could truly set them up for incredible opportunities later in life.
