Black United Fund of Oregon (BUF)
living in a country and state founded on racist principles, during a global pandemic
that has disproportionately harmed the Black, Indigenous, POC (BIPOC), and LGBTQIA2S+
communities. Meanwhile, post-secondary opportunities for BIPOC youth continue
to lag behind their white classmates, and BIPOC communities are falling deeper
into poverty while job loss continues unabated and disproportionately.
Our resolve – as an agency, as a community – has never been stronger.
The Black United Fund of Oregon (BUF) counters injustices by paving a road rich with education and career opportunities guided by mentors and community partners with lived experiences similar to our students. Much more than this direct support, we also use our voice to increase equity within corporate culture and educational institutions.
Thank you for considering a donation of any amount as we remain responsive to the urgent and evolving needs of our community, and resolute in our dedication to equip, empower, encourage, and engage the BIPOC community in Oregon and SW Washington.
Your donation makes a difference as we work to make a better today and a better future for our community.
Annually, BUF serves more than 1,000 students, most BIPOC and many who are also living in low-income households, who face the trauma of generational poverty, racial inequity, unequal career opportunity, and, for the many immigrant students we serve, a sometimes painful and uncertain adjustment to a new country while navigating a complex and unequal post-secondary landscape.
We know COVID-19 is adding to these challenges. And we know the shameful police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Mychael Johnson, Nina Pop, Wilbon Woodard and, sadly, so many others, makes raw the trauma of being Black in the United States.
BUF programs provide culturally appropriate support - recognizing this trauma and responding to it. For the past 37 years, BUF has been a beacon in the greater Portland community and we welcome you to join us.
