More than 23 million children and teenagers in the U.S. are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic. While obesity rates have soared among all age groups in this country, obesity is a particularly grave concern for children. Childhood obesity puts nearly one-third of America’s youth at early risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke – conditions usually associated with adulthood.
It’s not too late for our children. Every September (Childhood Obesity Awareness Month) students, educators, physicians, and parents take a stand and fight back with jumping jacks.
This September, you can help bring the message back to your state, city, school, workplace and home with SWEAT MAKES CENTS.
What is SWEAT MAKES CENTS?
SWEAT MAKES CENTS is the Teen Diaries Foundation’s (TDF) fundraiser and childhood obesity awareness campaign. Participants complete as many jumping jacks as possible, post a short video of themselves in action on social media, donate 10 cents for each move they complete, and challenge friends, family, and followers to join them. For example, 100 jumping jacks helps a participant raise $10 (tax-deductible) for charity! Participants get a great full body workout and the 501c3 nonprofit Teen Diaries Foundation uses the money (aka sweat equity) to fund childhood obesity prevention programs nationwide and award college scholarships to youth health leaders.
When is Sweat Makes Cents?
The fundraiser happens during the month of September (Childhood Obesity Month)
Who participates? Everyone participates! Principals can create a fundraiser page for their school, a fitness instructor can sign up for her class, a football team can kick off their commitment, or you can sign up as an individual. Anyone, at any age, or any gender can show their support!
What can you do to help?
Don't want to create a team fundraising page? You can just make a contribution to the cause and/or help recruit sponsors for the organization through social media. Spread the word!
Is there a fundraising goal?
Our goal is to raise $20,000.
Where does the money go?
With a $10 donation from 2,000 participants, the Teen Diaries Foundation can raise $20,000 this school year to provide 9 journalism scholarships, train health leaders on 20 college campuses and college graduates in Philadelphia, DC, and Atlanta, and inspire over 200,000 students to get moving across America. Take a look at the impact we've made in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017!
Who are the winners?
When childhood obesity rates decline, we all win! Your support helps "change" the way girls think about fitness and nutrition. Donors who contribute $150+ will be entered to win TWO Jet Blue Airlines Travel Certificates!
Let's put the FUN in fundraising! Thank you for supporting SWEAT MAKES CENTS! Questions? Contact SMC@teendiariesfoundation.org.
