Meet Jacob L.
JacJacob was on our very first Project Extreme program in the summer of 2001. At the age of 16, Jacob was an awkward teen who was unable to fit in at school. He felt different from all his peers that came from a so-called "normal" family. Jacob's father suffered from severe mental illness, often spending months at a time in inpatient facilities. While Jacob's parents were married throughout his childhood, their relationship was very strained. Jacob's mother tried her best to carry the financial burden of the family, but overseeing a household of 8 took its toll on her. Jacob tried his best at school but found that he was unable to keep up with the other students. Feeling so different from his classmates, Jacob began making friends with those that understood and accepted him. He and his new set of friends found salvation in the numbness of drugs and alcohol. Over time, Jacob dropped out of school and became involved in criminal activities. It was then that community members referred Jacob to Project Extreme. A spark was fired during Jacob's first Project Extreme program. While traveling in a safe and highly supervised group, for the first time, Jacob met mentors and therapists that he felt truly cared about him. He appreciated the daily structure of the Project Extreme program and even missed it at program end! Over the years, Jacob returned to summer programs and attended weekend and holiday retreats during the year. The lessons learned during Project Extreme programs stuck with him, and slowly, Jacob began to take back is life. Jacob returned to high school, and with the encouragement of the Project Extreme staff, he graduated with honors. Post high school, Jacob continued his relationship with Project Extreme, ultimately becoming one of our top counselors. Now an adult, Jacob has a masters level degree and is successful in the field of Finance. Jacob credits his long-lasting relationship with Project Extreme for turning his life around and is still in touch with the Project Extreme staff. Jac
