Birds, Bats, and Pterosaurs Science Talk
Birds, Bats, and Pterosaurs: The Independent Evolutions of Powered Flight - An SFBBO Science Talk with Maria Viteri. Find out what scientists are learning about how vertebrates got off the ground. Maria Viteri is a Ph.D. student at Stanford's Hadly lab who is interested in the intersection of conservation biology and paleontology, or conservation paleobiology. She uses recent accumulations of bones and young fossils to compare three independent evolutionary events of vertebrate flight to understand how animal communities respond to environmental changes (such as climate change) as well as establish baselines for conservation. Viteri came to Hadly from the Sereno lab at the University of Chicago, where she identified crocodile remains from a Saharan archaeological site as the cryptic species, Crocodylus suchus. Free.
