Manual Campus Library and Innovation Lab Our Motto: "The World Opens Through Our Doors." The Reading Culture at Manual is growing by leaps and bounds. In the last two years: We have increased book circulation 4x! We have removed books that do were outdated and do not meet our students’ interests, and replaced them with new, relevant and culturally responsive books. We have created a book club (Rosenberg’s Bagels donates the bagels and cream cheese!) with students and staff and have read two books thus far: “One of Us Is Lying” and “Unwind.”
We have a created a Teen Advisory Board for the library whose purpose is to give input on books and create programs. This February, they championed a “Date with A Book” program on Valentine’s Day, during which students hosted book talks while drinking hot cocoa. Over 20 students joined the program. Manual Reading Partners continues for the fourth year in a row to connect community volunteers with our students to read and discuss books the students choose. The Library and Innovation Lab is a place to create and innovate: We have created a podcast/music mix room which is used by students for classroom projects as well as for their own music creation. We have a makerspace with 3D printers, laser cutter, and art supplies for classroom and personal student use. We have a green screen and IPAD for video production for student projects.
Our Goal: To create the most authentic, relevant, responsive, and joyous library in DPS! In order to do that we need your help. Please consider making a donation. Your dollars will help us provide: -continued cultivation of our book collection. We only receive $6 per student per year for new books (approximately $1800). We have applied for and received grants to increase our book purchases but even with those monies, we currently have a book to student ratio of 11:1. Best practice is to have a ratio of over 20:1. Students come in all the time requestings books we don’t currently have in our collection. Help us be the ultimate in responsive by contributing dollars so that we can make purchases all year long. Examples of Recently Recently Requested Titles: Soul on Ice The Princess Saves Herself in This One Of Yesteryear The Hate You Give (Multiple copies) Radically Happy: A User’s Guide to the Mind Alex Approximately Recent Genre Requests: Poetry Black Lives Matter related books GLBTQ Fiction Manga Books on Investing -more programming including $$ for FOOD. We all know that the way to a student’s heart is through food! However, most grants do not allow for monies to be used to purchase food.
Help us do more events like our “Date with A Book” where we provided specialty hot chocolates and treats and attracted over 20 students to our event. -makerspace tools and materials including circuitry equipment, printmaking, sewing machine and more Any amount helps: $15-$25 provides one book requested by a student $50 provides food for one program $100 provides supplies for the makerspace $250 replaces 12 dated books $500 provides a new poetry section $1000 supports all of the above! $6000 allows every student to choose one book of their very own to keep!
