"I Am.." Creative Writing & Mindfulness Workshop
Mindfulness is a non-religious, centering, and calming practice of moment-by-moment awareness of
thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, characterized mainly by
"acceptance": attention to thoughts and feelings without judging whether they are right or wrong.
Mindfulness reduces stress, enhances performance, increases insight, and encourages awareness
through observing one’s own mind while intensifying empathy and attention to others’ well-being.
Mindfulness gives a time in life to suspend judgment and unleash natural curiosity about the workings of
the mind, approaching experiences with warmth and kindness—to the self and others.
The workshop is facilitated by Christa Riddle, Howell Alliance coordinator, who holds a Master of Arts in
Teaching, is certified in mindfulness, and has tutored writing in individual and group settings for 30
years. It is also facilitated by Stefanie Mastbeth Trento, owner of Beautiful Mind Counseling Center, who
is a Howell resident, Alliance member, and licensed professional counselor/trauma-informed. Stefanie is
also certified in mindfulness and yoga.
Location: Howell PAL (Southard Community Enrichment Center)
Dates: 2019: 10-15, 11-19, 12-17; 2020: 1-21, 2-18, 3-17, 4-21, 5-19, 6-16
Time: 3rd Tuesday of each month, 6:30 to 8 pm, Howell PAL (115 Kent Road)
Grades: 5th through 9th (open to boys and girls)
Price: $15/session; register one at a time or for several/all
Bring: writing project of choice, writing tools, and blanket/yoga mat
