What does TLC do and why is this work important?

Texas Lawyers for Children (TLC), which is the Child Protection Connection™ for Texas, protects abused and neglected children from being harmed by the systems meant to keep them safe.  TLC protects the rights of these vulnerable children in the courts, the community, and the legislature, and connects, equips, and mobilizes a network of over 3,000 judges, attorneys, and advocates to change children’s lives for the better.

Every year, 30,000 Texas children face one of the most traumatic chapters of their lives -- they are removed from home due to abuse or neglect and placed in foster care. A federal judge recently declared that far too many abused and neglected children leave foster care more damaged than when they entered. Too often, children in foster care fall through cracks in the system and suffer a downward spiral of harm that ultimately ruins their lives. TLC assists judges and attorneys because every important decision about an abused child’s life is made in court, and the system for handling these children’s cases is woefully underfunded. Judges and attorneys have the unique ability to protect the legal rights of these children and make decisions that keep children from falling through the cracks.
