Dykes with Drills
Who we are:
Dykes With Drills is a non-profit working to empower folx to foster leadership and confidence through working with their hands. We believe that by using tools and entering spaces typically exclusive of womxn and LGBTQ+ populations, we have the power to build communities of diversity and inclusion. Our community of builders includes people of all sexualities and genders, including those who are non-conforming, transgender, and allies.
Our mission is to create equity for womxn, transgender, and gender non-conforming folx in the trades and construction industry.
By hosting tools workshops, volunteer events, job referrals, and meet-ups, we cultivate opportunities for individuals to connect with each other and to use power tools. In everything we do, we foster safe, inclusive, non-judgmental spaces for learning and teaching.
Yes we call ourselves Dykes with Drills, and we are a group of builders inclusive of all gender non conforming, trans people and allies. We welcome anyone and everyone who wants these skills for themselves and their communities to reach out and participate with us!
At Dykes With Drills we are committed to four goals:
TO ENCOURAGE FOLX TO USE THEIR HANDS
Power tools are empowering! We engage people of every skill level in opportunities to use power tools which we believe helps build independence and confidence. We believe that using tools can be an antidote to a disconnected digital world and we have all felt that transformation which comes with using tools.
TO INCREASE VISIBILITY
Representation matters. By promoting stories of underrepresented people in skilled trades, we are increasing opportunities for people to be seen and heard as leaders in their industries. Industries that use power tools are sorely lacking in gender and racial diversity, which is why we are passionate about growing a diverse community of womxn, transgender and gender non-conforming people in the trades. Members of our community are already building awesome things - we want to make sure they are recognized for that.
TO OFFER AFFORDABLE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
We are determined to make sure that our tools workshops are inclusive of people in a variety of financial situations, offsetting workshop costs with donations, grants and sponsorships, and making sure no one is turned away for lack of funds (NOTAFLOF). Economic hardship is a reality for many people in society and we aim to subvert this.
TO CONNECT PEOPLE
Through project-based collaboration, volunteering, job referrals, and meet-ups, we connect with each other and establish a vibrant network of transgender, womxn, and gender non-conforming people who build. New handypersons to highly skilled tradespeople, homeowners to contractors, learners to teachers - we are all in this together.
By donating, you are helping to fund:
1. Scholarships with POC preference, making our programming accessible to those in financial strain
2. Material costs, maintenance of tools and part replacements, assuring our tools are safe and effective
3. Paying our workshop instructors and assistants, giving value to their trade skills and sustaining long term staff
4. Growing our reach, helping us create workshops and events in other cities and states!
