6th Annual Freedom from Violence 5K Walk
Taking 1 Million Steps to End Violence
Damion Gosa Memorial Foundation (DGMF) will be hosting its annual Freedom from Violence Walk and fundraiser on Saturday, February 29th, 2020. This year our goal is to take One Million steps toward ending violence in the South Mountain Community in Phoenix, AZ. The event will raise awareness and critical funds for the foundation’s programs and outreach.
The foundation’s mission is to “empower, encourage, motivate, and inspire youth to rise above their environment and reach their highest potential.” DGMF is a 501(c)3 Arizona nonprofit EIN: 45-5441868. Our community center has been part of the neighborhood near 22nd Street and Alta Vista for more than 9 years.
Each year, young and wise alike are united to walk alongside a busy thoroughfare with handmade signs denouncing violence. Strangers stroll side-by-side; unified in their voice. Phoenix Police motorcycle officers’ cordon off the side of the road while leading and following the group. Phoenix detectives also walk shoulder-to-shoulder with community members bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community they serve.
The walk will start and finish at Hermosa Park located on 20th Street & Southern in Phoenix, AZ. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m., rain or shine. The tax-deductible registration fee is $25 for all participants. This is a family event and for all fitness levels. After the walk there will be free live music, entertainment and vendors. Food will be available for purchase. All proceeds will support DGMF programs and outreach.
The first 100 people to register receive a commemorative 6th annual bracelet.
