Living in a Post-Christendom World

Mini-Course, $59.00

Christianity in America is at something of a kairos moment. Old models of doing and being the church are being replaced with new ones. The place of Christianity in the personal, social, political, and institutional life of America continues to decrease. Advances in technology and changes to education demand diverse and innovative modes of communication. Pluralism is an undeniable reality, and any effort directed toward justice and transformation must engage different communities and different understandings of the common good.

In light of these realities, it is necessary for people of faith to engage in Christian reflection, proclamation, and action in a way that moves beyond the four walls of the church. The purpose of Living in a Post-Christendom World is to provide learners with a clearer understanding of the larger cultural shifts affecting Christian faith and service.

Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to explain the difference between “christendom” and “post-christendom” visions/forms of Christianity; and apply biblical and theological insight to real world situations or problems.

This course is entirely self-paced. Feel free to engage the learning activities on your own time and schedule. Some individuals will advance through the learning activities quickly, others at a more moderate pace. Most learners will complete the course in ten hours or less start to finish.

The course opens on March 2, 2020. Registration is underway now but individuals will not be able to begin their study until March 2. The price of the course is $59.00. JCSTS does not grant refunds for its mini-courses. Please make sure you have the time and motivation to complete the course before your register.

The course is organized into two units. The first is an orientation to Canvas Learning Management System, our online classroom. Please take your time with this unit, particularly if you have never taken an online class before or if you are uncomfortable with technology.  An expert will be available to assist you within a 24-hour window if you need help. Access to the core content of this course will be granted only after you have completed this first unit.

The second unit includes readings, videos, and activities carefully designed to inform and inspire you. For your own benefit, please do not circumvent or short-change any of the learning activities. The videos and readings in this program are in the public domain and are provided at no additional cost to you. In some cases, you may want to purchase materials referenced here for your personal library but this is entirely up to you and not required for successful completion of the course.

All JCSTS' programs are based on the honor system. Individuals are expected to exhibit integrity, character, respectfulness, and cooperation as they work through the various learning activities. Offensive behavior, misuse of technology, or other eqregious activity will not be tolerated and may result in expulsion from the course or other penalty.

This mission of Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary is to advance communities of faith, justice, and compassion through innovation in theological education. We're excited you've decided to join the JCSTS community! Learn well, enjoy, AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS!
