Prison Mala Campaign
Over the past two decades, the population of women in prison has increased by 278%. Additionally, we know that 95% of the women currently incarcerated struggle with PTSD. We have a women’s prison crisis.
The rapidly growing population combined with limited funding means that these women struggle to access quality programs to support them as they heal from trauma, build character, and work to create a better life for themselves. But, DAYA Foundation is here to help.
DAYA provides a 200-hour yoga teacher training program for adults in custody at Coffee Creek women's correctional facility. Women who participate in these training are able to not only access the benefits of yoga but also to teach yoga on the inside, cascading the benefits of these programs to countless other women. This unique program helps to teach mindfulness and compassion and builds a community of healing within the prison.
How can you help? By building a mala!
A mala is a devotional necklace made up of 108 beads. We've dedicated 8 malas to the women at Coffee Creek and 8 to the men at Oregon State Correctional Institution. Having sponsors for all 108 beads on each mala raises enough support for each student to participate in the yoga training program at their prison. Each student who participates will then be able to teach in prison - creating an even larger impact with your generous funds.
These women are teaching the most vulnerable populations within the prison- women with traumatic brain injuries, addictions, mental illness, and developmental delays. This program reaches women who need it most. It creates community where it is needed most and helps to bring light into the darkness.
Donate five beads: $115
Donate four beads: $92
Donate two beads: $46
Donate one bead: $23
Donate a whole mala! $2484
With support from your community, you can make a huge difference in the lives of women living in prison. Thank you for helping us build our malas.

We are also facilitating a second round of training at Oregon State Correctional Institution beginning the weekend of Thanksgiving and going through June. Over the course of these 7 months, the men in residence (adults in custody) at OSCI will become certified yoga teachers. This program has been running since the year 2015. The need for yoga on the inside is growing. Training more teachers means increasing access to yoga for all of the residents at OSCI.
