Support local reporting & community conversations!
In the 1990s, the Alameda Journal newsroom in Alameda had nine full-time staffers covering city hall, schools, sports, the community at large and a daily paper. Now, those resources have dwindled, and with little access to reliable local news, Facebook groups have arisen organically as important but ad hoc public squares. In Alameda, people often get their information through large place-based Facebook groups. These online spaces are prone to negative and hostile commenting, inaccurate information and rumor mongering, as well as capricious or indifferent moderation.
With Alameda Local, Spaceship Media plans to develop and support a meaningful, respectful community rich in civil, civic engagement. We will support this Facebook community with reliable reporting and information and clear and consistent moderation. In doing so, we will create communities that will elevate meaningful discussion, build relationships between those on opposite sides of difficult local issues, and foster a relationship with Spaceship Media’s reporters as trusted sources for news and information.
Your generous tax-deductible donation will support the work of the journalists, moderators and project coordinators who will make Douglas Local possible. As a non-profit organization, Spaceship Media relies on the support of donors such as yourself!
