Jesse Schlesinger & Masayo Funakoshi
A member of Intersection for the Arts
As JUSFC 2020 Fellows, San Francisco-based artist Jesse Schlesinger and Kyoto-based chef Masayo Funakoshi will create an installation and performance-based work engaging food, architecture, agriculture, and craft through a temporary, experimental, and functional ‘restaurant’. Beginning with extensive research, we are developing a work that explores sustainability through the lens of food and agriculture, and present it within an architectural installation that further embodies these concerns. The fundamental importance of craft in Japanese culture (whether through food, architecture, agriculture, ceramics, or woodworking) and its subsequent influence on the West will form the basis for the project. Both the food events and the structures we build to house them will actively engage these histories from a contemporary perspective, with the intention of proposing a model for sustainability as we look toward the future.
