Poetic Hike along Graves Creek

Saturday morning in March when wildflowers are starting to bloom and the creek’s rumbling sound calms our minds, join us for this easy to moderate hike. During the hike, we will pause to reflect and to record our experience of Graves Creek and Mardis Mill Falls with river poet Tina Mozelle Braziel*. Please bring a small notebook and pen/pencil to carry with you on the hike.

Meet at Mardis Mill Falls entrance at 10 am and walk along Grave's Creek as far as we can go (usually no more than a mile each way).

Bring a snack, drinking water, comfortable walking shoes, a walking stick is helpful, and your camera... a great opportunity to take photos or record videos to enter FLFR's Art, Photo & Video Contest.

“There are many beautiful waterfalls located throughout Alabama. While some are more hidden than others, they’re most certainly worth discovering.

One waterfall in particular is Mardis Mill Falls (also known as Graves Creek Falls) which features a scenic cascade just over 16 feet tall and 35 feet wide.

Mardis Mill Falls is located near Blountsville, Alabama. Over the years, Mardis Mill Falls has become a popular swimming spot among the locals. During the warmer months, especially summer, you can expect to see crowds of people here.” Aerial Adventures

*Tina Mozelle Braziel is the author of Known by Salt (Anhinga Press), winner of the Philip Levine Prize for Poetry, and Rooted by Thirst (Porkbelly Press). She has been awarded a fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and an artist residency at Hot Springs National Park. As the first Eco-Poetry Fellow for Magic City Poetry Festival, she collaborated with the Cahaba River Society to create eco-poetry curriculum and videos. She and her husband, novelist James Braziel, live and write in a glass cabin that they are building by hand on Hydrangea Ridge. They are currently writing a collection of poems about their glass cabin life. The book will be released in 2024 by Pulley Press.
