For the last few months our attention has been shocked by our shrinking IRAs. Dismayed by the fact that we can’t easily acquire our $5 latte. Mad that we can’t find toilet paper. Frustrated that we have been required to ‘shelter in place’ in our heated, furnished homes. Relegated to watching movies and playing video games. Reminded again and again to practice good hygiene.

I am not making light of the struggle. It is real. My own income and holdings have taken a huge hit. But our struggle is not being able to get our hair colored ($60+). Or not being able to have our weekly golf outing ($55+). Or relegated to watching movies on our cable subscription ($120+). Or not being able to eat at our favorite restaurant ($25+).

There are those whose already meager existence has become even bleaker. Already struggling to feed their families, living in structures with dirt floors, with no possible way to practice proper hygiene. I am talking about the poorest of the poor. Where $5.00 can feed a family for a full day.

Aleena Jerome is a friend of mine who lives in Dunyapur Lodhran, Pakistan. Daily she has looked after the children in her neighborhood. Generously giving her time, money and energy even while living on practically nothing herself. With the onslaught of the Corona Virus things have gone from bad to worse. They have no money. They have no food. They have no medical infrastructure.
