Kate Mitchell is a choreographer, dancer, collagist, designer of sculptural garments, and the author of "Fashioning Women". Since founding Kate Mitchell & Dancers in 2003, she has interwoven dance with art and design to create projects that are layered with multiple meanings and expressions. Her current project, TERRAIN, will premiere November 18-19, 2016 at ODC Theater, San Francisco. Tracing the connections between the patterns and textures of the female form and the natural terrain surrounding all of us, TERRAIN grapples with society’s disparaging view of aging, particularly in women. This collaborative work also features the work of choreographers Bianca Cabrera, Brittany Ceres, and Claudia Anata Hubiak, composer Ben Juodvalkis, lighting designer Walter Holden, and photographer Alessandra Mello.
Through multiple disciplines, Kate Mitchell identifies the contradictions and incongruities of personal experience and cultural expectations. All of her projects are connected by a passion for color and texture, beauty and strangeness, and the expressive power of the human body.
A graduate of New York's High School of Performing Arts, Mitchell holds a BA American Studies from Yale University and an MA in Dance from UCLA. The San Francisco Examiner wrote, “If designer Jean Paul Gaultier and feminist leader Gloria Steinem had a lovechild- wrap your head around that one for a moment-she might have turned out like Kate Mitchell.”
