Spearow is a male 8 month old chocolate lab pup with a huge,
fun personality who came to PETSinc from Berkeley Animal Center in Berkeley
County, SC. He was taken to their open shelter after being hit by a car
resulting in horrible injuries, including a broken pelvis, severe bruising, a
broken orbital socket, and a severe upper respiratory infection that had
progressed into pneumonia. His prognosis was not very good, in addition to
anticipating a long road of recovery with major necessary surgeries.
The first priority was strengthening his immune system by treating the pneumonia. After 2 weeks of powerful antibiotics and IV fluids in our Critical Care Unit, Spearow began to feel better. Then focus could begin on treating the rest of the injuries left from the car hitting him.
Choosing to deal with the most difficult issue first, our doctors repaired Spearow's broken pelvis by performing a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO). This procedure consists of removing the ball of the hip joint, after which the ball is gradually replaced with scar tissue as it heals. Not long after, the FHO was followed by an eye enucleation where the eye is removed from the broken orbital socket due to severe damage.
Finally, with follow-up antibiotics, a strict pain management plan, and rehabilitation/physical therapy treatment in place, Spearow started his journey to full recovery. During the first week, he had three sessions with our Companion laser therapy unit to reduce inflammation and help speed the healing process. After ten days of sustained recovery and three sessions of laser therapy, it was time to carefully get Spearow back on all fours using our AquaPaws under water tread mill. This large therapy unit allowed our patient to get full motion usage of all four legs without the stress of gravity impact on the effected hip from the FHO surgery.
Spearow is now full steam ahead on his way back to being a regular lab puppy! He is still undergoing therapy, returning to almost 100% range of motion in his hip, as well as building and strengthening his back leg muscles.
We need your help to cover the cost of his surgeries, therapies, and rehab. Because of you, we are able to change the lives of severely sick and injured pets, giving much hope in situations like Spearow's and many others where it first seems entirely hopeless.
This adorable, playful smart pup will be available for adoption soon. Spearow may have had a rough start at life, but he will shortly get to experience his "Happily Ever After" in a new home full of love and devotion. Thank you for helping make that happen!
