The 2020 UC Berkeley Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association (UCB CLAA) Scholarship Program is sponsored by Joe Kapp and Family. Once identified by Sports Illustrated as “The Toughest Chicano,” Joe is proud to continue giving back to his beloved alma mater. We are thankful to have a leader like him in our community. Thanks to his contribution, UCB CLAA Scholarships will support undergraduate and graduate Chicanx Latinx students at Cal who demonstrate need for tuition, books, equipment, and living expenses. Become a CLAA Scholar and apply TODAY! Scholarships are awarded on the basis of need and/or merit. A needs assessment and overall financial aid package will be evaluated to determine the amount of assistance provided by UCB CLAA. Scholarship awards are based upon the following primary factors: Matriculation at UC Berkeley with undergraduate or graduate standing Financial need Commitment to the Latinx community Leadership potential Exceptional academic and professional potential —Required Materials— All applicants must submit: Application form Current resume Copy of your academic transcripts (official or unofficial) CalCentral print-out of your schedule of classes Screenshot of your Financial Aid Shopping Sheet/Award Letter (must include all financial aid awards and net cost) Individual and/or parent/guardian income tax return or parent check stub or additional proof of income (if no income, submit a statement explaining financial situation). If you are a transfer student, last tax return, proof of income, or statement is acceptable. Please ensure that you cover social security numbers. Responses to the questionnaire and essay questions —Questionnaire— Responses should not exceed 250 words per question. a. Describe your personal and family background. b. Describe your past, present, and future community involvement. c. Describe a special circumstance affecting your need for financial assistance. —Essay— Please keep your answer between 500-750 words: Describe how your Latinx background has influenced your view of education and the world today. How do you hope to use this influence to empower your community once you graduate from Cal? —Application Deadline— All application material must be completed and postmarked by Sunday, August 9, 2020 11:59 pm. Please email scholarships@ucbclaa.org if you have any questions. —Important Notes and Instructions— The number and amount of awards depends on availability of funds as determined by the UCB CLAA Scholarship Committee and Chapters. All CLAA Chapter Scholarship recipients will be selected by the respective chapters. Chapter Scholarship award finalists may be asked to participate in an additional phone or video interview. Chapters may reach out in late August 2020. All Chapter Scholarship award recipients will be notified in late September 2020. All scholarship recipients will be required to attend the SWAG Award Luncheon on Friday, October 16, 2020 (location TBD). —Joe Kapp Scholarship— The top overall applicant of the 2020 Scholarship Program will be awarded the Joe Kapp UCB CLAA Scholarship, as selected by the UCB CLAA Scholarship Committee. This recipient will also receive mentoring from a Cal alum and will be featured on various UCB CLAA venues throughout the year! All UCB CLAA Scholarship award finalists will be asked to submit an additional two minute video answering the following prompt - Joe Kapp famously refused a Minnesota Vikings team MVP award saying “There is not one most valuable Viking; there are 40 most valuable Vikings.” In his coaching days at Cal, Joe asked his 40 players to play “one hundred percent for 60 minutes”. His 40 for 60 motto cemented his legacy and continues to inspire many who embrace its core message. “Explain your ‘40x60’ mentality. How will Cal help you get there?” The Scholarship Committee will reach out to all finalists in early September 2020. The UCB CLAA Scholarship recipient will be announced at the SWAG Award Luncheon.
