As Covid-19 strikes the entire global community, the reality that we are one human family is more apparent than ever.

Tanzania, like the rest of the developing world, is particularly vulnerable to the ravages of the pandemic. Health care infrastructure is lacking, particularly in rural areas. The ability to test for the virus is almost nonexistent. Hygiene is challenging due to the lack of indoor plumbing, unreliable water sources, and close living conditions. Health care workers must cope without personal protective equipment, adequate staffing or hospital beds. The entire country only has a handful of ventilators.

Thus far, Tanzania has largely been spared. But due to inadequate testing, the actual numbers are undoubtedly higher than those being reported. The Rafiki Village Project’s commitment to the community of Dumbeta Ward compels us to do what we can to help meet the challenges presented by Covid-19. Just recently, we were able to increase our stipend to the Dumbeta Dispensary so that personal protective equipment, hand sanitizer, thermometers, bleach, and other needed supplies could be purchased. We also supplied all 1200 households in the Ward with half a kilogram of soap. And we set up foot-powered hand-washing stations in critical places where people gather, such as public water sources.

Our next move will be to set up hand-washing stations at all of the Ward's five schools in advance of their planned re-opening. This will help to mitigate the risks associated with overcrowded classrooms and primitive sanitation facilities. With your generous help, the hand-washing stations can be set up very quickly and the Ward's students and teachers will be that much safer. Crucially, your donations to this campaign will allow us to stick with our plans and budget for 2020. This includes completing new classrooms at Gichbord Primary School -- which will reduce crowding -- and bringing clean water directly to Lamay Primary School, where students still interrupt their lessons to fetch untreated stream water. We are also hoping to begin construction of a badly needed labor and maternity ward at Dumbeta Dispensary. This is a top priority for the Community, and no wonder: right now, women are giving birth in the same small exam rooms where Covid-19 patients would be seen.
