ALTERNATIVA is an apparatus for cultivating cutting-edge contemporary dance and music through practice, performance, improvisation, education, curation and production. Guided by a mission to articulate and transmit the transformative powers of bodies in motion, deep listening and artistic impulse, it offers interactions in corporeality and creativity worldwide. In action in San Francisco since 1998, ALTERNATIVA is led by dancer Kathleen Hermesdorf with musician Albert Mathias and supports the work of the directors, known for their collaborative inclinations, radical dance classes and music events, and performance pieces exploring human conditions, behaviors and other ineffable states.

ALTERNATIVA also engages an extensive population of artists, participants and audiences with ongoing programming, featuring an annual FRESH Festival of Experimental Dance, Music + Performance every January with 3-4 weeks of main stage shows, studio work, salons and social events with 50+ artists from the Bay Area and beyond; ongoing series and workshops in the Bay Area; residencies at universities, festivals and studios; and PORCH summerschool at Ponderosa in Germany. ALTERNATIVA has received support from the Zellerbach Family Foundation, William + Flora Hewlett Foundation, Kenneth Rainin Foundation, CA$H Grant, CHIME/MJDC, the San Francisco Arts Commission and The Suitcase Fund.
