LMSA National Policy Summit 2020
Curando Nuestro País
Policy Summit 2020
The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) Policy Summit Committee is proud to announce its first-ever nationwide virtual conference. In response to the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, LMSA believes that a virtual conference provides the best opportunity to educate and equip its members to engage in health policy while prioritizing the health and wellbeing of our communities. Members of our organization from across the country will participate while observing social distancing guidelines and learn what it means to be an advocate for their patients.
This year's theme is “Curando Nuestro Pais”, or “Healing Our Nation”. Recently at a press conference, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and one of lead members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, spoke on the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on minority communities:
“When you’re in the middle of a crisis, like we are now with the coronavirus, it really does have, ultimately, shine a very bright light on some of the real weaknesses and foibles in our society."
The recent events of the pandemic and the social unrest brought on by the murder of unarmed Black men and women by police officers demonstrate that much work must be done to address the weaknesses and foibles that Fauci mentioned.
This is only the second LMSA Policy Summit to occur during an election year and 2020 could easily be one of the most important elections of our lifetime. DACA, child separation, affordable healthcare, police reform, and countless other issues will be on the ballot. As the future healthcare leaders of this country, we owe it to ourselves, our colleagues, our family, and our friends, to be well informed on these issues and work towards making meaningful change. This year, at this time, having a policy summit that addresses critical healthcare and social issues could be one of the most important things our organization has ever done.
We ask that you join us in October and together we take strides towards healing our country.
