Did you know that in Forsyth County, almost half of the cases in our juvenile justice system originated as a school-based complaint?
In schools across our nation, suspension has become the predominant practice to handling student misbehavior, with about 2.7 million suspensions given out each year.
Students who are suspended are more likely to struggle with grades, more likely to drop out of school and more likely to get involved with the justice system.
Studies have shown that Black students are more likely to receive a suspension for the same offense that a white student may receive a lesser penalty for.
Here in Forsyth county, Black students are 6 times more likely to receive a suspension than white students
Once a youth enters the juvenile justice system, their likelihood of repeated involvement with the system increases, with up to 84% of youth eventually re-offending within 5 years.
This current approach is causing long term harm with a lasting impact that is devastating families and communities.
We know that this isn’t justice. We need to re-imagine justice.
These statistics are not the fault of schools. They are a reflection of our society - all of us. The good news is that we as a society have the capacity to re-imagine our current approach and nurture a new way forward. At Triad Restorative Justice, we are committed to cultivating different outcomes for our youth, our schools and our communities. Restorative Justice challenges our current understanding of justice and advocates for systemic changes in our system to one that seeks to repair the harm, rather than punish. We are working to provide a new path for our youth today, particularly kids in our own community.
We want justice that produces healing. We want a justice that produces hope. We want a justice that produces true accountability. We want a justice that restores relationships. We want a justice that strengthens and nurtures ALL of our youth, regardless of race, ethnicity, ability, gender, or class.
Will you join us to plant, cultivate and help our restorative justice programs grow?
Your contribution will go directly to support:
Workshops to equip educators with tools and practices which promote more restorative classroom discipline approaches, reducing their reliance on disciplinary practices that isolate and exclude students from their learning community.
Teen PeaceBuilders & Justice, which equips middle and high school students with restorative justice tools for addressing difficult issues and for conflict resolution, and provides opportunities for leadership development.
RESTART classes which help kids involved in the juvenile justice system develop positive ways to handle anger and strengthen their social skills.
Impact Circles which help youth address incidents of harm, crime or misbehaviors by repairing the harm and working to address the root causes of their actions
Advocacy & solutions to disrupt the school to prison pipeline
A donation today brings more hope and healing for our youth. Together we are growing a stronger and healthier world.
