The Origin Bank Family Garden at the Children’s Coalition is run by volunteers, but the pandemic has put a strain on time and funds. Produce grown here is used to feed children enrolled in Early Head Start, and teaching gardens were installed at 22 child care centers across Northeast Louisiana. Our mission is to export gardening experience and knowledge to children and families and allow positive family interactions safely at home.
Gardening provides growth for a child’s brain, body, and soul – giving a sense of responsibility and purpose. In June, Evan and his mom, Heather, attended our Drive-Thru Super Saturday event and went home with all the materials to start their own family garden – Heather also received parenting resources and tips on how to support Evan’s emotional health.
Today, their garden is growing and the memories they made allow him to thrive. Heather says, "I loved seeing the excitement on Evan's face when he opened the garden kit and saw everything. He learned so much and was proud to see his plants grow."
