Lakewood Institute of Theatre (also known as LIT) is the expanded Lakewood Playhouse theatrical education program designed specifically to build skills and prepare actors of all ages for the stage. Our vision is to allow students to step into our classes to learn new techniques and styles that help them thrive as actors.
With focuses on audition preparations, scene studies, movement, voice, technical theatre, improv, stage combat and more, each session is designed to help students thrive and ultimately help prepare them with life skills that build on the focus of each class, whether or not students choose to make theatre their career goal or simply improve their confidence, team work, collaboration, empathy, and innovative thinking.
- In 2018, 60 scholarships were awarded, totalling $12,605
- In 2019, 53 scholarships were awarded, totalling $11,895
- In 2020, with COVID-19 the requests for scholarships continue but the opportunities to request donations have been rare and infrequent. Many scholarship donations come from local organizations, season and single ticket audiences, and from audiences of LIT Productions.
My name is Austin and I was in the Little Mermaid Jr. camp for two weeks. I had a lot of fun performing and ended up making friends that I still talk to. I have learned a lot about acting from camp and would love to keep acting. Acting is my passion and whenever I am on stage, it makes me feel free. I love making the audience smile and laugh and I love the feeling that I made someone happy after the performance. Acting helps me meet people that turn into my friends. It helps me do things that I wouldn’t normally do, like playing a role that I haven’t played before or am not used to playing. These are some of the reasons I love acting.

I am so grateful to have been part of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to participate. This has been such a great experience which I hope to be a part of next summer. Thank you so much for helping myself and others to afford amazing camps like the one I was a part of. I met so many amazing people and learned to much. These past two weeks have helped me to break out my comfort zone and be more confident. Once again, I want to thank you and express my gratitude to you for making this accessible to me.

Hi, my name is Roslyn! I have been a part of Lakewood Institute of Theatre for probably about 7 years now. I was in the Into The Woods Intensive camp most recently and had a ton of fun doing it! I have made many friends over the years and even brought outside ones in! Theatre means a lot to me and it’s so cool that there is a place to replicate the process of a real show so you can get experience for the future. LIT has helped me immensely with my passion and introduced me to many aspects of the theatre community.

I have been involved with LIT since fall of 2016, when they did their spotlight show with Lakwood Playhouse, and I have loved it ever since. I sadly only really have the time to do 1 or 2 camps a summer, but each camp I do is an amazing experience, I always love being a part of it, and I learn a lot. I’ve graduated out of the program, but I’m still planning to be involved in other ways. LIT is a beautiful experience for all.

This program is so fun. I hope that it continues for a long time. The script is great, and the play is funny. I know the other students and I have learned so much from this experience. Later in life, some of the skills we have learned in this program will help us succeed. Until then we will have a great time and continue learning.
