Sammy’s Story: A Transformed Life on the Path to Recovery

Sammy first came to Cord of 3 in the Fall of 2019. At his first appointment, he was not sober and was facing academic probation at his university due to the decisions he was making with his drug use. At this first session, he wasn't motivated for change nor for counseling. It wasn't until two DUI charges later and expulsion from his university that Sammy finally began to see his need for change. When he returned to counseling in 2020, his life had spun out of control. He was living with his girlfriend at his parent's home, had no financial means, and was mandated to 5 months of drug rehab and counseling. Sammy was emotionally blunted, spiritually bankrupt, and going through withdrawals. All of his friends, due to his own drug use over the past several years, had abandoned him. He was alone and full of anger and fear.
Sammy and his counselors met each week over the course of the next few months. He was learning new life skills and coping skills to maintain his sobriety, Sammy also began his counseling and discipleship, exploring his choices and his relationship with God, which was non existent even though he had made a confession of faith as a teenager. Over those 5 months of counseling, Sammy began to see himself in the way God sees him. His identity shifted from that of a drug addict to a Child of God. As his mind cleared, his emotional state improved and his understanding of God came into focus, Sammy began to look to his future and see what his possibilities were. He was determined to not let the past mistakes he had made hold him back from being who God created him to be. He explored avenues that would open his future and he made such progress that his probation officers began to advocate for him. Today, his passion for God, his vision for his future, and his relationships with his family have all become a driving force for him in his recovery. He ended his relationship with his girlfriend because of the sin they were living in and he is now plugged into a church that is encouraging him and helping him spiritually.
Beyond helping him maintain sobriety, the counselors at Cord of 3 helped Sammy see himself the way God sees him. Today Sammy is back in college, planning for a future career in technology, and is working in his church with the music ministry. He credits his success to God and to the counseling he received at Cord of 3, insisting that, “I am who I am today by the grace of God and His leading me to the Christian counselors at Cord of 3.”
The counselor who worked with Sammy reported, "I am thankful to be a part of what God has done in Sammy's life. Sammy is an incredible young man and continues to inspire me through his determination and hard work. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to help disciple him in his walk with God”
