Travis’s Story: When the Flu Isn't Just the Flu
Travis Bones celebrated his 4th birthday in August 2018. He was looking forward to playing Tee Ball and Basketball, hanging out with his friends and making people laugh. Just days after his birthday party, Travis suddenly got a high fever, which 3 different health care providers all dismissed as an early case of the flu. But it wasn't just the flu!
No one knew Travis was born without a spleen, which compromised his immune system, leaving him unable to fight a bacterial infection. This undiagnosed condition is a rare genetic birth defect called Isolated Congenital Asplenia and it's estimated to impact at least 1 in 600,000 babies worldwide. Within hours of first spiking that fever, Travis developed sepsis and died.
TEAM 4 Travis' mission is to prevent childhood death from Asplenia. One of our goals for 2020 was raising $10,000.00 to be eligible for the Uplifting Athletes Young Investigator Draft Matching Grant program. Through this amazing program, Uplifting Athletes would match our donation, enabling us to provide $20,000.00 to researchers studying Asplenia.
We felt confident about meeting this goal, with a lot of help from our first Golf Tournament planned for May 2020. Then, in March, the dreaded COVID-19 arrived and we were forced to postpone the tournament. Despite millions of Americans facing uncertainty, our incredible community rallied around us, helping us march halfway down the field.
But as Thanksgiving approached, we realized we were facing a 4th-and-20 situation, and would need a lot of help to cross the goal line. How could we possibly raise the remaining $5,000.00 of our $10,000.00 goal? As Travis would have said, "Wait! I have an idea!" Well, here was our idea: What if we didn't try to get larger donations from just a few donors? What if we asked 500 people to donate just $10.00 each? That's a pretty good idea!
For just a little more than the cost of a fast-food lunch, you could join our team and help push us across the goal line, raising that $10,000.00 for the Uplifting Athletes Young Investigator Draft. You'll help us fund critical research to help understand the cause of Isolated Congenital Asplenia and develop a Newborn Screening or other diagnostic tool. Invite your friends to join the team and be part of the 500 pushing across that goal line!
