Parent involvement is a central component of Montessori philosophy. As a public charter school, the May Sands Montessori School requires parent involvement and provides information to families through a variety of methods that is relevant to nurturing the whole child. Each family is required to give 25 hours of volunteer service, each school year, with five of the total hours dedicated to fundraising initiatives. Families have many varied opportunities for completing their annual service requirement, which include classroom time, field-trips, grounds maintenance, prep for parties, classroom support, or participation in any of the following committees: Fundraising, House & Grounds, Hospitality/Social, Planning & Development, or Public Relations/Publicity
Service hours may not be converted to monetary donations. It is understood that all families must perform the required service to the school, and must provide a record of their service to the school. The school maintains a log in the office for families to record their service.
Failure of a parent or legal guardian to uphold or fulfill their service hours is sufficient grounds for denial of automatic enrollment to the school the following year. Families will be notified in writing of the consequence for non-fulfillment of the Contract of Commitment, which is the placement of his/her child/children in the lottery drawing, to determine enrollment for the coming school year.
