On This Side of the World was one of eight musicals selected from among 349 submissions to present at the National Alliance for Musical Theater’s 32nd Festival of New Musicals (NAMT) in November 2020. Paulo K Tiról (music & lyrics) first conceived of the show at NYU Tisch’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program and began collaborating with Noam Shapiro (director) in 2018 as Resident Artists at Access Theater. In 2019, Shapiro’s Three Hares Theater produced a sold-out workshop production of On This Side of the World at Access Theater that was named a Critics’ Pick by Theatre is Easy and celebrated as “a musical revue that feels not just welcome, but long overdue.” In 2020, a revised version of the show was presented at Prospect Theater Co.’s IGNITE Concert Series; and in 2021, Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, CA brought On This Side of the World to the West Coast for the first time in a staged reading. Over the years, selections from On This Side of the World have also been presented at the NAMT’s Songwriter’s Cabaret, Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, New York Theatre Barn’s New Works Series, Musical Theater Factory’s POC Roundtable, and more.
PAULO K TIRÓL is a composer, lyricist, and book writer from Manila, Philippines. He was a Dramatist Guild Foundation Fellow from 2019-2020, the recipient of the inaugural Benjamin Indick Award in 2021, and an artist-in-residence at Access Theater with director Noam Shapiro. His projects include music and lyrics for On This Side of the World (NAMT Festival 2020, Prospect Theater Company’s IGNITE series, Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, CA); book, music and lyrics for Called (DGF Fellows showcase); and orchestrations for Ma-Yi Theater Co.’s Felix Starro. His work has been presented at Joe’s Pub, Barrington Stage and more. NOAM SHAPIRO is a New York-based director, creative producer, and the Producing Artistic Director of Three Hares Theater. He was the SDC Foundation’s 2020 Kurt Weill/Harold Prince Directing Fellow, a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, a former MTC Directing Fellow, a Drama League First Draft Resident Artist, and a winner of OPERA-America’s Robert L.B. Tobin Director-Designer Prize for The Little Prince. Noam has developed work with the Drama League, Ensemble Studio Theatre, the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, Access Theater, The Lark, New Dramatists and Fresh Ground Pepper.
