Our session will run from 02/29/24-05/09/24 with the week of 04/04 off for Spring Break.

Workshop Format: 03/14/24


If you would like to join us this week, please pay the family enrollment fee if you have not already (due one time per semester per family) and then select how many students will be attending for this week. Rate is per student. Fees go towards the cost of the lessons, supplies used during class and for take home projects as well as overhead.  This breaks down to just $9 an hour for you to have some me time while your amazing child has the opportunity to learn so many things!


In the Kitchen: Homesteading Class: Make Kombucha starter and Ginger Bug Starter.


Gardening: Oyas, water preservation, smart watering


Herbs and Edible Flowers: Marshmallow root - infusion (can be used orally and topically). Can help soothe and treat digestive ulcers, treat skin conditions and improve wound healing, can improve metabolism, treat sore throats, reduce water retention, treat sore or cracked skin.


Foraging and Survival Skills:  Cultivate a sense of awareness in nature. Learning to see, hear, smell, walk, touch (and what NOT to touch!) will empower your children and the woods won't seem quite so scary. Fine tuning this sense of empowerment can also ease the fears of being alone in the dark for some children. 


Team Building/Science/Art (on rotation):

  • Yellow:  Team Building: Target Practice: Set up items found in nature and use a rock to knock them down from different distances.

In the Kitchen: Homesteading Class: Students will bring back their ginger bug starter and we will make a homemade soda from that starter. (If your student did not attend the previous week, we will make a ginger bug starter available for them.)

 

Gardening: We will discuss weed and pest control. What is a true "weed" versus weeds that are beneficial to our bodies?  We will make a natural bug deterrent and talk about what plants are good for the garden to keep certain pests from demolishing your harvest.


Herbs and Edible Flowers: Holy Basil - oral tincture 

Boosts immunity, decrease blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, promote wound healing, improves respiratory disorders, antibacterial and antiviral properties, protection from infection, protects the liver, treat acne, promotes dental health, promotes eye health, protects against radiation.



Foraging and Survival Skills: How to find, collect, purify, filter and distill water from multiple sources.


Team Building/Science/Art (on rotation): 

  • Yellow: Art: Bug Hotel. Build a bug hotel using a shoe box and fill with things found in nature to build a lovely home for our bug friends.
  • Green:  To be posted.
  • Blue:  Team Building: Outdoor games.  The students will engage in an encouraging, team building game of Gaga Ball, one of the favorite games of past Homegrown students!

In the Kitchen: Homesteading Class: This week we will be mixing up our own ranch seasoning as well as taco seasoning to take home that is organic and free from ingredients that you cannot pronounce!


Gardening: We will discuss beneficial plants and flowers in the garden.


Herbs and Edible Flowers:  Licorice root - oral/topical glycerite 

Improves indigestion, can minimize menopausal symptoms, helps protect your teeth, improves weight loss, treat eczema, soothe the gut, cleanse the liver, antiviral, can treat canker sores, helps treat hepatitis C, boost your immune system, can treat the symptoms of PCOS and help balance hormones, soothe sore throats, soothes upset stomach.


Foraging and Survival Skills: How and where to build a fire for cooking and warmth. How to build a fire wall. Fire safety and how to properly extinguish a fire. How and why it's important to stay warm. We'll also be making fire starters to keep in survival packs. 


Team Building/Science/Art (on rotation):

  • Yellow: Nature Exploration: Identifying Leaves. Talk a walk with the group and identify different leaves, which are safe to touch, and which are not. 
  • Green: To be posted.
  • Blue:  Art: Making Cloud Viewers Students will each receive a cloud chart explaining different types of clouds. Then the students will make a cloud viewer and utilize to view the sky that day.

In the Kitchen: Homesteading Class: This week, we are going to try our hand at hand dipping candles!


Gardening: Using all parts of the plant to benefit our bodies. Talk about the leaves, stalks, roots of different plants/herbs and how they benefit our bodies.


Herbs and Edible Flowers: Turmeric - topical salve

Improves skin complexion, strong anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer effects, reduces arthritis symptoms, high antioxidant activity, can improve depression and memory, supports strong bones, may prevent eye degeneration, decrease chronic pain, heal wounds.


Foraging and Survival Skills: How and where to build a shelter in nature with an explanation of all of the "why's" and "why nots".


Team Building/Science/Art (on rotation):

  • Yellow: Chlorophyll science activity: Observe how leaves contain chlorophyll and how we can paint with it!
  • Green: To be posted
  • Blue:  Art: Bubble art! Students will use a bubble wand and blow bubbles onto their papers and make art
    with colored bubble solution.

In the Kitchen: Homesteading Class: Have you thought about when you wash your hands with name brand hand soaps, while your hands might be getting "clean" how many different chemicals is your body absorbing from the soap? What about the cleaners in your home? What do the companies use to make the products smell "good"? This week we will be making a natural hand soap as well as natural citrus cleaner with no chemicals included.


Gardening: Food scraps from the kitchen for the garden: How to prepare eggshells and banana peel water to nourish your plants as well as touch on composting scraps.


Herbs and Edible Flowers: Arnica - topical salve Used externally to improve bruising, sprains, muscle aches, superficial phlebitis, joint pain, inflammation from insect bites and swelling from broken bones.


Foraging and Survival Skills: The rules of foraging and harvesting, what's safe to eat and what's not. We will actually be eating what we find on this day, however your child is not obligated to eat anything they're not willing to. 


Team Building/Science/Art (on rotation):

  • Yellow: Team Building: Building a nature dam.  Work together to build a nature dam using foil, water and sticks.

In the Kitchen: Homesteading Class: One of the first weeks, we touched on food waste in the kitchen and how you can utilize some food you would otherwise throw in the bin or compost. This week we will be making watermelon rind candy and another type of "candy" from a food waste if we have time.

 

Gardening: Micro greens, sprouting your own seeds and why.


Herbs and Edible Flowers:  Black Cumin Seed - infused oil (Black seed oil). Improves hypertension, diabetes, balances cholesterol, reduce inflammation, accelerate weight loss, has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, improves wound healing, psoriasis, allergies, digestive disorders, reduces redness, reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.


Foraging and Survival Skills: Making a sundial and learning how to use it. 


Team Building/Science/Art (on rotation):

  • Yellow: Art: Mud Shapes.  Use mud to form any shape you want and let it dry, then paint!
  • Green: To be posted.
  • Blue:   Team Building: Soccer/ Basketball Students have time over at the soccer and basketball
    fields to play either sport as a team.

In the Kitchen: Homesteading Class: This week we are going to discuss about some of the ways to preserve food including canning, dehydrating, freeze drying, etc.


Gardening: Discuss the importance of bees. Build a bee box.


Herbs and Edible Flowers: Chicory Root - tea bags. Immunomodulatory-helps regulate the immune system whether the system is weak or overactive (autoimmunity), anti-tumor, helps regulate appetite, promotes good digestion, antioxidant, anthelmintic (destroys parasitic worms), prebiotic.


Foraging and Survival Skills: How to humanely hunt in nature (no firearms will be used, and no animals will be harmed), set traps and learn to recognize your best food options where you are.


Team Building/Science/Art (on rotation):

  • Yellow: Nature Exploration: Making Sun catchers from nature.  Color popsicle sticks, then go on a walk and find some nature items for our suncatchers.  Seal items between saran wrap and popsicle sticks to make personalized sun catchers. 
  • Green: To be posted.
  • Blue:   ART Making marshmallow launchers- Using a pool noodle and part of a balloon, students
    will make a marshmallow launcher.

In the Kitchen: Homesteading Class: Chewing gum! We are going to make our own from a more natural base and some of our herbs.

 

Gardening: Finish painting our bee box. Clean up garden area.


Herbs and Edible Flowers: Cacao - infused oral glycerite. High in antioxidant activity, boosts mood, improves gut health, improves heart health, anti-inflammatory, lowers blood pressure, enhances cognitive function, prevents heart disease, controls blood glucose levels, cancer preventative, enhances skin health, rich in calcium, high and magnesium, improve blood circulation, rich and polyphenols, increases serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphins, counteracts depression.


Foraging and Survival Skills: Learn how to use a compass and learn about colloidal silver.

  • Yellow: Group selects an activity to do together and have fun on our last week together!

  • Blue:  Team Building: Water balloon Volleyball- Using towels as a launcher students will use
    water balloons and play several games of volleyball!
