In this class, we’ll explore descriptions of settings, environments, ecosystems, and spaces. We'll examine the ways that setting is not just a passive element of a creative work, but may be a character in its own right, or may act as a potent touchstone for memory and history. We’ll read and look at work by writers, graphic novelists, and visual artists like Edward P. Jones, Sayaka Murata, and Richard McGuire, using texts and images as prompts to develop our own exploration around setting and space. You'll come away from the class with generative material approaching and reframing setting from multiple angles.
