Description:
Attention Kathak dancers/lovers!
Navatman brings to you a Kathak-filled weekend (Aug 20-22) where you can
Hone your technique & develop stamina, grace, and precision
Improve strength and flexibility for injury prevention
Dig into tatkar, chakkars, and tukdas to deepen nuance and precision
Learn small compositions that will take your understanding of kathak vocabulary to another level
If you have missed attending in-person classes & meeting new people, here’s your chance for an intimate learning experience - 8 in-person slots only*! Classes will be held live in our studio, with the option to join virtually via Zoom.
Bonus: an open mic night, a performance by the teachers, and a group meal (for in-person attendees) on the last day
*Note that in-person attendees must be vaccinated
Experience required:
Knowledge of and comfort with flat and heel tatkar, chakkars of 8, 5, 3, and 1, and combinations of different kinds in teentaal.
Who this is for:
Anyone looking to increase their Kathak capability, intensify their practice, jump to a new comfort level in dance, and meet and learn with dancers of different experience levels and backgrounds from around the US.
What you will get out of it:
An understanding of how Kathak comes together and a chance to learn in person and work closely with your teachers and fellow students. Walk away with new tukdas, bants, ladis, and combinations.
Safety policies for in-person option - subject to change based on latest guidelines:
All in-person participants must be fully vaccinated and will be required to show proof of vaccination. Teachers will also be vaccinated.
In-person registration will be limited to only 8 students to allow plenty of room for social distancing
Open windows and fans will help to increase air circulation
Other policies may be in place as needed to comply with the latest safety guidelines at the time of the intensive

Friday, August 20th:
7:30-9:30pm - Warm up, riyaaz, and technique
Saturday, August 21st:
11 - 11:45am - Yoga/Warm up
11:45am - 1:15pm - Riyaaz and Technique (tatkar, chakkars, combinations, and challenges)
1:15 - 3pm - Lunch break
3 - 5pm - In-depth work to be determined by the needs of the class - learning an item, abhinaya, storytelling, or otherwise, designed to challenge the needs of each individual dancer
5 - 5:30pm - Break
5:30 - 6:30pm - "Open mic" for students and teacher performance
Sunday, August 22nd:
11 - 11:45am - Yoga/Warm up
11:45am - 1:15pm - Riyaaz and Technique (tatkar, chakkars, combinations, and challenges)
1:15 - 3pm - Lunch break
3 - 5pm - In-depth work to be determined by the needs of the class - learning an item, abhinaya, storytelling, or otherwise, designed to challenge the needs of each individual dancer
