When Hurricane Ida made landfall on August 30, 2021, it wreaked havoc across the south and the eastern seaboard. When GFB began raising money to give disaster relief grants to people impacted by Ida, we received over three hundred applications for financial relief. People spent weeks in hotels because of lost power and lost homes; people missed paychecks or lost their jobs entirely.
Go Fund Bean was able to raise $120,000 to help people impacted by Ida. But the process was slow. As I write this, people we want to give money to still haven't been able to receive it because of the long delays of bank holds and accounting departments.
Our goal is to hold money for disaster relief in reserve.
Maybe there will be another weather disaster tomorrow. Maybe it'll be in a year. Either way, all the funds raised during Giving Tuesday will be held in savings until people need it. This way, we are able to respond quickly when disaster strikes.
