The purpose of the Friends of City of Rocks State Park is to help support the New Mexico State Park in enrichment of the park area. Specifically, the Friends aim to enhance, preserve and promote park use, to participate in nature as responsible stewards of the earth, to create an awareness of the wonder, fragility and importance of the park, and to develop and improve existing education/interpretive programs.
We are a relatively new organization. We sponsor monthly Star Parties in the Park, held at the Orion campground. The star parties are held on the Saturday closest to the date of the New Moon and begin at sunset. We have 2-3 large telescopes used to view the night sky and it is spectacular out there! This event is free and open to the public. Friends also sponsors field trips in the park on birds, winter botany and spring flora. We are working on preserving and enhancing the Park's Botanical Garden with new native plants. In 2021, Traveler Magazine had an article entitled "Best State Parks to Visit in the U.S.", and City of Rocks was listed as the best state park to visit in New Mexico. We are very proud of all the hard work the park staff and volunteers have done. Friends mission continues to focus on maintaining and enhancing the park experience for all visitors. We hold lecture/business meetings four times a year with lecture presentations on such subjects as birds of City of Rocks, night sky pollution, snakes, insects, plants, etc. This is a small organization currently with approximately 25 members. Look for our quarterly newsletter with awesome articles on native species and plants in the park. When you become a member of Friends, you will receive a free annual day pass to the Park. Copies of our newsletter and applications to become a member can be found on our website: www.friendsofcityofrocks.org.
