Greetings!
As many of you might know, I retired from pediatrics in June 2022. Shortly thereafter my husband, Rene, and I moved to a rural NE Georgia community that is alive with art, wineries, trails, and beautiful vistas and people from all walks and parts of the country. Alas, this is also a microcosm of the country at large; we have become more divisive, isolated, and fearful. Worst yet, we are fully 2 years into the COVID-19 pandemic (new variants keep surfacing), a major war in Western Europe that could easily engulf us all, rising temperatures -- all of which lead to greater anxiety, depression, and further isolation and withdrawal. The need for support and counseling is great but access is limited and often beyond the budget and social circumstances of those in need.
Enter the Family Resource Center (FRC) of Northeast Georgia. I guess I can remove myself from private practice but not the desire to step in and help as needed. The mission of FRC is to prevent child abuse by strengthening families and nurturing children. As is true of most non-profits, FRC is working on a shoe-string budget provided by grants and contributions. At present, they serve 5 counties and 8 major programs -- all of which are free services to the community. These include supervised supervision in their cozy living spaces; in-home visitation; trauma-based counseling for children, teens, and parents; and parent education classes. They have liasoned with the local hospital to provide a packet of services to ALL moms of newborns. AND (drum roll) FRC is launching Healthy Families America, aimed at potentially at-risk youth, especially pregnant teens.
I have now joined the board and am reaching out to my friends to help support these vital services. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and May is Foster Family Appreciation Month. I am asking for whatever you can give, ideally 100 giving $100. Money is tight and the need is overwhelming. I'm believing in you. Thank you
