Because of MiMentor, I had a support system to apply to medical school this year. I was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in the Medical School Ready (MSR) series. Being apart of a cohort made me realize that I was not alone. I am grateful I found people that understood the struggle in applying to medical school. Mentors and coaches helped me craft a personal statement that told my story of why I wanted to pursue medicine as a community physician. I appreciate the hard work the MSR coordinators made because I now feel I can tackle any question due to their great work in organizing Mock Multiple Mini Interviews. One key thing I learned in the application process is to always share something about yourself in any question. I also want to thank everyone who tolerated me through the late nights of writing secondaries together at a local coffee shop until the baristas shooed us away to go home.
Because of MiMentor, I developed my leadership skills. This is my second year with MiMentor. In my first year, I was the Vice President of Educational Pathways for Post-Baccalaureate students. In this role, I organized events at local coffee shops in Northern California where students shared their experiences in formal post-baccalaureate programs and organized the Together We Lead in Merced. After my first year, a new position was created when the executive board applications opened. After applying to the executive board of MiMentor, I became the Chief Technology Officer. In this new role, I oversee the social media branch and was blessed with an incredible team this year. I love the collaboration that we share and appreciate the talents that everyone brings. Thank you, Rosemary Vergara, Miguel Esparza, and Tim Nguyenfor being amazing. I am amazed at the work that you do for MiMentor, on top of the other things you do. As the leader of the social media team, the work that goes into creating content for our various social media platforms would not be where it is today without you.
Because of MiMentor, I will forever be grateful for the amazing mentors I met. Efrain Talamantes, MD, thank you for showing me what it means to be a leader as I transitioned into a leadership role in MiMentor. I appreciate you for helping create a space where students feel like their stories are validated. After graduating from college and moved back to Sacramento, I lacked a community of pre-med students. Even though I developed a support system in college, they were far away, and luckily MiMentor held a Together We Mentor at the UC Davis School of Medicine. It was at this event where I knew MiMentor was a safe space where I could grow and help MiMentor expand in Northern California. Thank you MiMentor / Alliance in Mentorship!
